EDWARD HOEPELMAN

Edward Hoepelman began his journey studying voice at the Brabants Conservatorium in Tilburg and the Conservatory of Maastricht (where he continued his studies in opera for another four years). Afterwards he received the opportunity to learn from Sir Peter Pears in Aldebourgh, England. In addition he studied with Maestro Arrigo Pola (Modena, Italy) and Professor Hendrikus Rootering (Krefeld, Germany). He broadened his knowledge of breathing and vocal techniques with the help of several different sources: Bram Balfoort, Mia Kuipers (the Sven Smit method) and Horst Coblenzer (the Coblenzer method – Boldern, Switzerland). In his life, Edward has made countless study trips to London, Vienna and New York.

Edward has also been taught in EVTS (the Estill Voice Training System) by Gillyanne Kayes, Anne-Marie Speed, Paul Farrington and no other than Jo Estill herself. EVTS is a well-known and thorough vocal method, that can be used for every vocal quality (from speech, to belt and even opera). In addition he strengthened his classical voice technique with the famous tenor and vocal coach James McCray. Last but not least, he studied the Lichtenberg method under Ingrid Voermans for numerous years.

As a performer and soloist, Edward was part of many operas, operettas, musicals and zarzuelas. He also worked on several radio and CD recordings, and collaborated with the Metropole Orchestra, the Limburgs Symphonic Orchestra and a Mariachi Orchestra; with the latter he toured the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Edward performed many vocal recitals as well, with among others harpist Saskia Veen accompanying him (singing works by Britten, Strauss, Faure, Debussy and Duparc).

At the present time Edward Hoepelman is fully committed to teaching. He is cofounder of the MusicAllFactory in Tilburg (a part time musical theatre course, preparing students for further education at a conservatory). In 1995 he received the opportunity to establish the musical theatre department within the Brabants Conservatorium, currently known as the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. He has been working there to this day, as the lead vocal coach and artistic advisor of the department. Edward was also connected to the Fontys Dansacademie as vocal coach for a period of time from 1996 till 2001.
